11月6日 beth 2.0i realize i'm about 5 years behind the rest of my peers doing this, but i finally have my own domain *drumroll* ......
it is...... bethgo.com yay!
i don't have a good explanation for why it took so long to do so, however the last three days of getting this all up and running has impressed upon me that self hosting your own blog/website is still not for the average joe and jane consumer.
am i excited to have all sorts of flexibility and control? yes!
do i look forward to munging up my blog as i learn what the hell i'm doing? of course! am i at all envious of the folks who sucked down years of html knowledge the last 10 years? *nods emphatically* i have to say it; i feel the same sense of endless possiblity that i did when i left aol in 1994 to journey forth onto the wall-less world wide web. yippee!!

b. 10月30日 what's wrong with crossing the street?"Going to the other side of the street can be a barrier," said Launi Skinner, senior vice president in charge of Starbucks' store development.
b. 10月25日 what's the point of trackbacks?***update*** trackbacks have been turned off for public sites...i can now go back to fuming about other random petty things for the rest of the day.
please please please someone tell me what the point of trackbacks is!!?? all i get are spammy links to bizarre search sites and other such nonsense. i'm having a frustrating internet day full of rants and rages about too many social networking sites so please ignore me. but seriously i can't keep up....
b. 10月17日 1/300,000,000yes, i am one of 300,000,000 people living in the united states. the milestone was crossed at 7:46 am edt. ironic to hear that on npr right after a broadcast on china's attempts to curb their population growth as they now stand at 1.3 beeeelion people. ironic to hear that after a report that wal-mart just purchased 100 hypermarkets in china for 1 beeeeeelion dollars. scary.
b. 10月8日 san francisco days... san francisco nights...travelogue - short trip down and up from seattle to san francisco.
so riddle me this. and *disclaimer* i am not usually one to rant about the tsa or the fabulous contributions they make to national security, however, there is a limit. there has to be a limit. right? right?
back to riddling. i prepare for my flight by diligently checking the website to ensure i'm following the latest and greatest in home land security advisements. the latest being all liquids/gels/creams etc must be placed in a 1 gallon clear plastic bag and must contain no more than 3 oz of that substance if it is going in your carry on. ok gotcha.
deodorant 2.7 oz - check
lotion 1.0 oz travel size - check
toothpaste - less then half of a 6.2 oz tube - check
leave shampoo and conditioner at home - will pick some up in sf - check
placed in a nice clear zip lock container - check
i'm golden. and a few hours later i'm in the security screening line feeling rather smug at my preparedness. in fact feeling so smug i chuckle to myself as i check out the guy in front of me who has what appears to be four large glass containers with apple scented candles in them. all four are in a wooden box that has rope wrapped around it and look like rather menacing could-be bomb like devices. i think - "there is no way they are going to let him take that on a plane". i mean they just took away some lady's eye cream and pitched it in the large 30 gallon black trash can filled to the brim with orphaned toiletries.
amazingly enough - he gets through with no problems - i waggle my eyebrows and think - "well that was unexpected". so i'm breezing through after him and get trapped by the cracker jack terrorism preventing tsa agent who holds in front of me in a very accusatory way my tube of crest regular tooth paste. she says "sorry maam but this cannot go on board, all containers must be less than three ounces - this is 6.2". me not catching the subtlety of her point says, "oh but there is less than half in there" and watch as she simultaneously explains they can't be expected to measure all substances and tosses my tube in the can. wow. just wow. simply wow. *sighs*
recap: large - half - poundish - glass containers of flammable materials = ++ good
recap: less than half of a 6.2 oz tube of creamy crest toothpaste = ++bad

10月4日 identity crisisthere is this website i discovered awhile back called onxiam. essentially you create a log in for this site and then proceed to fill in all your various identities across the web. if you make it that far you will see a drop down box for all the various sites and services that you possibly have an identity for... i spent an afternoon filling out mine with this sort of pathological need to fill in all the blanks, all the while thinking (cue my best joan crawford imitation) no. more. social. networks. ever!!!
b. 365+i stopped blogging just about a year ago. in fact i think my last blog post here on my msn spaces blog (now windows live spaces - see what happens in a year) was written sept 14th, 2005. that’s my dad’s birthday by the way. he’s had a hell of a year too. a year ago… i created an account in second life, now i own my own island i left microsoft to move to san francisco and work for linden lab, now i just moved from san francisco to seattle and am back at microsoft. my mom was given three months to live, now she’s still here and looking forward to christmas. i was a size 10, i am a size 18, i will be a size 10 a year from now i loved my psp, now i love my ds the incredible good fortune to work at both linden lab and microsoft; i’m still blown away. and the gift of each additional day that my mom is around to drive me nuts over clean socks and help with her computer. the experience of walking through the mission district every day to and from work. a year later. i am different. b. 9月14日 AFK?Hey guys - taking a bit of a break from blogging. I promise I'll be back soon and thank you for your notes wondering where the heck I've been!
b. 8月20日 Greetings from FOOYou know you are up to no good when you don't post a blog entry in over week - but more on that later...
Spending the weekend in Sebastopol at the Friend's of O'reilly campout. I had the pleasure to attend a couple of years ago, and it's been great to catch up with some of the great people I met at FOO #1. Later today I am going to be doing a session called "My Life in the Matrix: one player's experiences in the ever expanding world of MMORPGs", The plan is to spend a few minutes looking at three current MMOs - World of Warcraft, Star Wars Galaxies and my latest *cough* addiction *cough* Second Life. The rest of the time will be open discussion about what else we might expect from these emerging virtual worlds as they continue to grow more popular. Last night Cory from Linden Labs and I decided to partner up for our session as he is going to talk about Second Life's lessons to date of building a completely user-created online world, from technical, legal, economic and community perspectives. This should be a lot of fun, as games seem to be a running theme at this year's gathering.
I'm running off to another session, but will hope back on later for further FOO news. In the meantime you can see all sorts of pics here.

8月12日 Summer BloggingThere is something incredibly difficult about blogging when:
1. its 80-90 degrees outside
2. you just started a new job
So let's take these in order.
There is something really difficult about doing anything computer related when the weather is bright and beautiful AND your dog finally learns how to swim. I've spent more time outside this summer than I remember in recent years. There is something about the sunshine that compels me to go outside; whether a quick walk to Fremont for coffee or a jaunt in Gas Works park I honestly believe I live in the most beautiful place on Earth. Once night finally settles in and it is time to blog my head usually hits the pillow for a good night's sleep. I should also mention in Seattle it doesn't get really dark until about 10PM during the summer months.
I started my new job a little over a month ago, and as is often the case at Microsoft I hit the ground running picking up various projects for the Channel 9 team. I'm also working on a few things for September's Professional Developers Conference so stay tuned for reports once we get closer to the event. The videos I have shot for Channel 9 have not made it up on the site yet, but I have to warn you once they do I am still very much learning how to shoot a proper video; i.e. lighting, framing, etc.
After what felt like an incredibly long wait, Sci Fi Friday is back in business with new episodes of Stargate SG1, Stargate Atlantis and Battlestar Galactica. I hate to say that both Stargates are pretty much filler while waiting for Galactica, but they just pale in comparison to what I consider to be one of the best television programs of all time. Recently they added old episodes of Firefly to the line-up so if you didn't catch the series when it originally ran on FOX - you must not miss it this time around. Especially with the movie Serenity just around the corner.
I am now a full template Jedi in Star Wars Galaxies having gained my last skill in Powers - CLOAK! - since then I've been having a blast sneaking up on people and running the Corvette without being taken out by a SBD (super battle droid) the minute I step out of the starting point. Next on the agenda - get all the POI badges, continue to move up the rebel ranks, and give the GWC a go by trying to get better at PVP.
As much as I enjoy blogging, I'm finally embracing the world of media by giving both podcasting and videoblogging a go. Probably the best advice I received was focus your content on something you know a lot about and you have plenty to say on. I took that to heart and am dabbling with a Podcast series - Tales from Eclipse: A Star Wars Galaxies Podcast and a series of SWG How To Videoblogs. I don't have a dedicated host for either, but thanks to my husband they both have a temporary home.
The good news is the weather has returned to the normal 70-80 degrees and it's starting to get darker earlier which means curling up with my laptop and getting back to writing. Hope everyone else is having as good a summer as I am.
/cheer

8月1日 Talking about An Open Letter to the Passenger in the Green SUV Who Screamed as He Went By Yesterday
My friend Elden has a blog and it is worth checking out even if you are not a cycling enthusiast. I think there is a Fat Cyclist in all of us - even on our best days :) Here is a small sample...

7月20日 Time FliesI was driving home from work yesterday listening to my XM satellite radio - Ch54 Fred to be exact - and I happened to tune into a BBC Live recording of the Smiths in concert. After listening for a bit I looked over and noticed a line scrolling that read Smiths Live 1985. And then it hit me. I WENT to that tour. I saw the Smiths at the Fox theater in Pittsburgh in the Spring of 1996 for the Queen is Dead tour. I am now officially old enough to have concerts I have seen live rebroadcast as historical events.
Rather than dwell on my aging self, I chose to use this moment as a chance to reminisce about all the concerts I have been to in the past 20 some odd years. And now for your reading pleasure here is my list of top 10 live shows (in chronological order)
1985 - John Cougar Mellencamp (before he dropped the Cougar, played 3 hours straight and the back up band was amazing)
1986 - The Smiths (Phranc - the self proclamied Jewish Lesbian Folk Singer opened and the Smiths rocked the house afterwards)
1987 - Bob Dylan/Tracy Chapman (one of the first BIG concerts at the Gorge Theater, took us 4 hours to get out of the parking lot after the show)
1989 - REM (setting Knoxville, TN. This had to be the highlight of my Freshman year in college as I had been listening to the Athens, GA boys since 1984)
Now things start to get a little murky because I have seen quite a few shows both during and after college, but I'll do my best to remember the year.
1992 - Tori Amos (just a woman and a piano, nothing more required)
1992 - Ministry/Ice T and Body Count (Helmet was supposed to open, but the drummer was hurt in a car crash)
1995 - Seattle ENDfest (Lallapalooza style music fest, got to see Korn on one of the side stages before they hit big)
1997- Lilithfair (let's here it for the Ladies! A full day of estrogen and musical goodness)
2000 - Bob Mould (up close and personal at the Showbox and playing on his birthday no less)
2003 - Radiohead (Thom Yorke is possibly the most entertaining lead singer I've ever seen - the guy knows how to work an amphitheater)
Honorable mentions: The Horde Tour, Chris Isaak, John Williams (yes of Star Wars and ET Fame) and Superdiamond.

7月11日 First my childhood - now my teens.I wrote about being dismayed by the total sell out of Star Wars during the pre-hype of Episode III (i.e. Darth Vader shills for BK); basically feeling like any last vestige of my late 70's - early 80's upbringing had been completely trashed.
Well /sigh, they've started in on my teen years. I inadvertently stumbled upon the INXS reality show tonight; or more accurately it was on the TV and I became morbidly curious. This living train wreck of a show not only managed to poop (yes poop!) all over one of my favorite bands from high school, INXS, but for some reason felt the need to cast as host, Dave fracking* Navarro. Dave Navarro formerly of both Jane's Addiction and the Red Hot Chili Peppers who has sold out for the SECOND time (see MTV's 'Til Death Do Us Part) will appear each night as the proxy INXS judge since the band will be away recording their new album (yah, riiight).

* TM Battlestar Galactica - four days and counting!! 7月5日 But can she Code?It would seem only right that if I am going to be spending my time thinking, dreaming and breathing all things Channel 9, then I should probably know how to code my way out of a paper bag. Unfortunately, the truth is my passion for technology has never moved beyond pure consumption of said technologies. Given that - it's time I suck it up and get with the program - literally.
Today I installed Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition Beta 2 and tomorrow I plan to kick things off by watching these introductory videos on MSDN. I'll keep you posted as I write my first Hello World program and hopefully work my way over to doing some of the projects at Coding4Fun.
Any and all advice from you seasoned developers who have found your way here is not only welcomed, but encouraged!
b. The Channel 9 Guy goes to Europe! If you are at all familiar with blogs.msdn.com then you probably know of Betsy Aoki the Community Program Manager who makes sure it all "just works" (at some point we'll do a Channel 9 behind the scenes video with her). She is in Europe right now speaking at a few events and generally charming the pants off everyone. Needless to say she took her Channel 9 guy with her and is documenting his journey every step of the way.
I've always thought Betsy was a great writer, and the truth of that feeling has now been firmly cemented by her description of the Channel 9 Guy as "a constant travel companion - quiet, amiable, sinister, and spongy."
b. 6月25日 Adam Curry is still a fox!Flashback to my 8th grade crushes: Rick Springfield, the boys of Duran Duran, Rob Lowe, and the best Mtv VJ of them all Adam Curry. Flashforward twenty years to Gnomedex 5.0 and my current crushes: Christian Bale, Ewan McGregor, John Stewart, and now one of the best Podcasters of them all Adam Curry. I don't mean to completely demean Adam and all the amazing things he has contributed to the world of technology by so blatantly objectifying him, but I am a girl first and foremost and there is something incredible about seeing someone you crushed on from afar - oh so long ago - right in the flesh. Putting on my geek blogger hat still doesn't change my level of giddiness since I've admired what Adam has done in changing the nature of the web and our role in it. You can hear his keynote later on his site as he is recording it live for his daily podcast. b.
My Take on YesterdayHaving been a keynote speaker at the second Gnomedex and an attendee at number three, it's been amazing to see the growth of this event here in year five. For those of you that don't know back in 2001, my then manager at Microsoft, Derek Brown sponsored the first Gnomedex on behalf of Pocket PC. The rest they say is history. Kudos to Derek for understanding the importance of this event; as it has and will always be about spending time with fellow geeks and listening to what they have to say. In contrast to my homespun presentation at Gnomedex Two: Attack of the Gnomes on the new Pocket PC Phone Edition and the ever changing state of the wireless industry (and yes it's true - when referring to the legalities of making your own ring tones I did say "DRM be dammed. Just burn 'em" and as Doc points out I was indeed joking), Microsoft's RSS announcement yesterday indicates that Gnomedex is not only a two-day meet your fellow geeks slumber party, but a true industry event. Think CES meets Burning Man?! b.
6月24日 Recap Day One of Gnomedex 5.0I'm now home from Day One of Gnomedex 5.0 and the room is spinning. Mind you I'm stone cold sober; but I'm tipsy on meeting fabulous people and having an incredible amount of fun. I can tell I'm already starting to write a completely random babbling post, so I will save you the trouble of reading said randomness and call it a night. Tomorrow, WiFi willing, I will do my best to recap my impressions of today, but until then there are a whole lot of others who have already done so. b. |
